is capable of carrying over 600 passengers or the    equivalent of 545 private automobiles By choosing

Calgary Transit as your travel mode, Calgarians are helping to preserve and enhance the quality of our natural environment.

In 2007, Calgary Transit transported just over 90 million customers, which translates to a total of 131 million trips on CT Buses and CTrains.

River Bank: Bow River CalgaryIf these 90 million customers used their own vehicles at Calgary’s current vehicle occupancy rate of 1.2 passengers per vehicle it is expected that these drivers would generate some 258,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants annually. Since 2001, Calgary Transit’s CTrain fleet has been running on wind generated power and is 100% emission free, although the bus fleet does burn diesel fuel releasing 59,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2007.

So it has been estimated that the citizens of Calgary, by using Calgary Transit have helped reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 199,000 tonnes annually.

Strategies for Cleaner Air
The threat to our health and the environment from air pollution can be reduced if Calgarians change their travel behaviour and consider other alternatives. This can be accomplished through a number of ways:

  • increased use of public transit
  • increased car-pooling, walking and cycling
  • use of cleaner fuels
  • provision of high-occupancy vehicle lanes
  • performing regular maintenance checks/oil changes on vehicles and having emission control systems checked regularly
  • giving up a second car (according to Environment Canada, this can save about $600/month in after-tax dollars)
